Q&A

How did Jason get started?

Jason was interested in the arts at a young age and was influenced by his family who owned a successful boutique advertising agency in Toronto and strongly supported all of his endeavors into the fine arts.

Jason’s early experience was diverse - while gaining knowledge in the agency side of marketing and advertising, he was also apprenticing in classical fine art restoration.  He also committed himself to developing his craft in traditional oil painting and portraiture techniques.

Jason was a featured artist in various exhibitions in several Toronto art galleries.  One of his most successful series of oil paintings was based on the New Orleans jazz scene which led to global distribution of a limited print series.

Not too far forward into his career, Jason transitioned to editorial illustration and was mentored by some of the leading publication designers and art directors in Canada and the US.  This work propelled him to being a regular monthly contributor to publications such as The Globe and Mail, New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.

He has also illustrated several books including the “Great Garden Fix-Its” book for Rodale Press.

What are Jason’s preferred mediums?

Jason started his career as a classically trained fine artist.  After moving to a more editorial clientele, Jason works mainly with pen and ink and developed digital expertise in Adobe Photoshop to create his illustrations.  However, the nuance of sketching has remained foundational to his process, as Jason still enjoys creating with his hands while practicing traditional mediums along with mural work and sculpting.
